Report: Guardiola to make late call on inclusion of two Manchester City players not in full training this week

Manchester City defenders Kyle Walker and John Stones have been injured ahead of the game with Aston Villa, where anything less than a win could hand Liverpool the title.

Earlier this month, Stones and Walker were ruled out for the season, but the pair have been pictured in training ahead of the final match of the campaign. Liverpool face Wolves simultaneously.

The Times report they have not been able to get through a full training session, meaning that Pep Guardiola needs to make a late decision on their fitness.

City’s defensive options are down to the bare bones and getting the England internationals back could be a huge boost – if they are fit enough.

Injured pair Stones and Walker could return

Their report says: “There was some good news from the treatment room.

John Stones and Kyle Walker returned to training on Thursday. They have been unable to complete a full session, so Guardiola will leave it late to decide if they are fit enough to play.

Stones and Walker have missed recent matches with muscular and ankle injuries and City have felt their absence given that Rúben Dias (hamstring) is out for the season and Nathan Aké (ankle) and Fernandinho (hamstring) have been carrying injuries.

Guardiola said: “We have incredible doctors and physios. They have made a partial training today and we will see tomorrow. It’s good to have them back.”

Pep Guardiola was worried about facing West Ham last time out with the lack of defensive options and his fears were well-founded.

The Hammers raced into a 2-0 half-time lead before City fought back to keep their title destiny in their own hands.

It would basically be sealed now if Riyad Mahrez had scored his late penalty and will City come to regret that lack of ruthlessness? We will find out later today.
