‘The biggest one’… Gabby Agbonlahor urges £45m player to sign for Newcastle

Gabby Agbonlahor has now urged Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City and head to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United in January.

Agbonlahor was speaking on talkSPORT this morning and was convinced that Phillips didn’t have a future at Man City.

Instead, the pundit thought that Phillips had a brilliant opportunity to move to Newcastle, a side crying out for a new midfielder.

Agbonlahor was insistent that Phillips needed this Newcastle switch for the sake of his career, one heading nowhere at City.

He said: “This is the biggest one in the Premier League, he has to go for the sake of his career.

“27 years old, he should be playing the best football of his career. Outstanding at Leeds, he has only made 16 appearances for City.

“That’s not enough. When you have got a player like Rodri, who is never injured, never really gets sent off apart from the one he got the other week, he is going to play most the games, Pep has shown that he doesn’t trust Phillips.

“So if I’m Phillips, I’m saying, let’s get this done. Get me to Newcastle.

“They have lost Tonali to a year ban, he walks into that Newcastle team and fits that defensive midfielder role at Newcastle.”

Of course, Newcastle have often been linked with Phillips in the past few months.

Eddie Howe’s options have been massively depleted owing to injury and suspension of late, and fresh faces now seem a must in January.

Moreover, despite Rodri recently facing a three-match ban at Man City, Phillips’ minutes barely improved.

The midfielder has himself admitted that he may need to consider his options given how little football he is playing.

And many will agree that the £45m man is simply too good to sit on the bench at any club in the Premier League.

Phillips’ potential availability could represent a huge opportunity for Newcastle, a player who would improve their already strong XI.

And with the likes of Anthony Gordon now edging closer to an England call up, it would bode well to have a current member of Gareth Southgate’s squad in the side.

As well as Phillips, Agbonlahor has also been suggesting that Newcastle should now be making a £30m move for another England international who is now out of favour.

It does seem as if Newcastle may be busy in January, a window that now looks like a key opportunity.
