Newcastle now ready to bid for 27-year-old English player after Callum Wilson says he’s ‘top’ quality

Newcastle United are reportedly ready to bid for Kalvin Phillips, with the Manchester City midfielder emerging as a top target for the Magpies.

According to the Northern Echo, Eddie Howe’s side will move forward with a January swoop for the England international, with Phillips eager to leave the Etihad Stadium in the winter market.

Lauded by Callum Wilson as a ‘top quality’ player, Phillips‘ future has been heavily reported in recent weeks, with numerous clubs interested in signing the midfielder in City outcast.

Yet Newcastle are now clearly pulling ahead in the race to land the former Leeds United star, with Phillips an ideal fit for what the Magpies are looking for in the January transfer window.

Sandro Tonali’s season-long ban means that a defensive-minded midfielder is needed at St. James Park heading into 2024, and Phillips could not be a more perfect signing for the European hopefuls.

And this update seems to confirm that the Magpies will now press ahead with a move for Phillips, with Newcastle more than capable of meeting City’s and the player’s financial needs.

With interest high in Phillips from a number of clubs, Newcastle have to make sure they are putting down the groundwork now to sign the defensive midfielder.

Yet all accounts seem to suggest that Howe’ side are doing just that, with Newcastle turning all the right gears heading into the January transfer window.

Indeed, Phillips will be an outstanding addition to the Newcastle squad if a deal can be arranged, and all signs seem to suggest that such a transfer will go through with ease in 2024.

However, the ball is now in Newcastle’s court, and the Magpies must do all they can to ensure that this potential transfer goes through without a single hitch.
