In a Sky Sports season preview, Neville was asked how many teams he believes can win the Premier League title.
Neville named two sides he believes are in the title race, and elaborated on the league’s other candidates. “Liverpool and Manchester City (can win the title).
“City will definitely finish in the top two. Liverpool, I always have this little hope rather than thought that they might just dip slightly, and then maybe Tottenham are the only team I can see that can get close to them
“I don’t feel Chelsea, (Manchester) United, Arsenal are in a position to get close to the top two. The Champions League will cause a problem for Tottenham but they’ve got some world-class strikers.”
Spurs fans will be encouraged that Neville has picked them above their London rivals and Manchester United to challenge the top two, but may disagree with his reasoning.
Neville thinks Champions League might be a problem for Tottenham
There aren’t many Premier League teams that can argue they’ve had as strong a window as Tottenham this summer.
Antonio Conte has strengthened in every area, with Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perisic the headline signings.
In fact, Spurs’ squad has grown so much that Sergio Reguilon and Tanguy Ndombele – two players with Champions League experience – are no longer in Conte’s plans.
Although Conte can’t claim to have the same strength in depth as Man City and Liverpool, as long as the injuries don’t start piling up he should have enough quality players in the squad to be competitive on both fronts.
But a measure of just how far Conte’s team has come is that Tottenham can go into that game with the enviable combination of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield.
