According to ESPN Brasil, Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Brazilian youngster Giovani.
The report suggests that the Brazilian winger has a £50m release clause, and Newcastle are one of a number of European clubs interested.
One of the clubs Newcastle are up against for Giovani’s signature is Ajax, who had a £10m bid rejected, and Bayer Leverkusen are also keeping tabs on the Palmeiras attacker.
Newcastle are no strangers to recruiting Brazilian talent, with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton already lining up together in midfield for Eddie Howe’s side.
And it would signal a real shift in Newcastle’s worldwide reputation if they could pick up a highly-rated youngster ahead of Ajax, who is regarded as one of Palmeiras’ ‘greatest gems’.
Newcastle want to sign Giovani
The 18-year-old right winger has already made his Brazilian top-flight debut, and come on as a substitute for Palmeiras in the Copa Libertadores.
Any move from Newcastle to sign Giovani would not be with an immediate introduction to the first team in mind.
However, it would show that the club are willing to spend significant money on long-term investments, as well as players who are going to immediately improve the squad.
Newcastle have most recently been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Timo Werner, and could also want to add Alex Grimaldo to the squad.
