‘Strange’… Paul Merson says £24m Arsenal player wronged on international duty with England

Paul Merson has expressed his disappointment with the decision that England head coach Gareth Southgate made about Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

The former Arsenal and England international star has also made a note about Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

So, what has Paul Merson said about Arsenal and England international goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale? Let’s take a look.

What’s the story?

Well, England took on North Macedonia away from home in a European Championship Qualifying Group C match on Monday evening.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw. It was a ‘meaningless’ game for the Three Lions, as England had already qualified for the Euro 2024 finals.

Jordan Pickford is the number one goalkeeper for England, and the Everton star started on Monday evening.

This disappointed former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson, who believes that Southgate should have included the £24 million (The Athletic) Ramsdale in the starting lineup instead.

Ramsdale was on the bench. As you can see, Merson believes that the Arsenal star needed to have played against North Macedonia to get international experience.

The 25-year-old has played four times for England. Ramsdale has played 151 Premier League matches so far in his career. He has kept 37 clean sheets.

England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale facing tough times at Arsenal

Things are not going well for Aaron Ramsdale at the moment. The goalkeeper is now the second choice at Arsenal.

Ramsdale started the season as the first-choice goalkeeper for Arsenal. The Englishman played well for the Gunners last season and played a key role in the North London club pushing Manchester City hard for the Premier League title.

However, David Raya is now the number one goalkeeper for Arsenal. The Spain international joined the Gunners from Brentford in the summer of 2023.

While Ramsdale has not done anything wrong, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta seems to think that Raya is better with his feet and is better at playing out from the bench.

Arteta is sticking with Raya for the time being despite the Spanish goalkeeper making some bad mistakes.
