Tottenham Hotspur are now leading the way to re-sign Marcus Edwards – a player who Pedro Porro has already labelled ‘extraordinary’.
That’s according to Correio de Manha, with the outlet claiming the forward’s return to form for Sporting CP has revived interest from Premier League sides.
Marcus Edwards left Spurs back in 2019 and has made quite the impact in Portugal. The 24-year-old initially impressed for Vitoria Guimaraes before sealing a move to Sporting back in 2022.
He put in some exceptional displays in the Champions League last season where he also netted against his former side Spurs.
Tottenham have reportedly scouted their academy product in recent months but are yet to make a move to re-sign him.
The Englishman endured a slow start to the current campaign as he failed to register a single goal involvement in his opening four league games. But he’s netted twice and provided three assists in his last five league appearances and it seems his form has revived interest from Tottenham.
Tottenham favourites to sign Edwards
Correio de Manha claims that Edwards is once again receiving interest from English sides.
It’s noted that Tottenham and Chelsea are the current favourites to land the talented winger.
Edwards was ultimately allowed to leave Spurs a few years back due to concerns over his application in training.
But he’s made a huge impact in Portugal and even received high praise from Pedro Porro, who played with the winger during their time at Sporting together.
Porro labelled Edwards an ‘extraordinary’ talent during an interview with The Guardian back in March.
Of course, Tottenham snapped up Porro from Sporting in January and even waved 15 per cent of their sell-on fee on Edwards. It means they are only entitled to 35 per cent of the fee Sporting receive for the winger should he depart, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Edwards has been long-linked with a return to North London and he does seem like a good fit for Postecoglou’s side.
The talented forward boasts exceptional qualities on the ball and would be able to play on either side of the Aussie’s front-three.
Edwards reportedly has a release clause worth around £52 million in his contract but given Tottenham’s sell-on clause, you’d imagine there could be a deal to be done here.
