What West Ham staff privately thought about Jarrod Bowen before this season

Jarrod Bowen is having another fine season for West Ham United this year and continues to show signs that he can still improve.

And according to a new report by The Athletic, it’s no coincidence that Bowen’s all round game has now kicked on at West Ham.

The report details how West Ham staff assessed Bowen’s skill set before heading into the new season, and how they thought he could improve.

David Moyes’ backroom staff felt as if the winger needed to develop a more well-rounded game were he to keep progressing.

Staff felt Bowen still had a lot of potential to fulfil, and noticed some undesirable tendencies in his game.

Many thought the 26-year-old’s tendency to cut in on his left foot made him too predictable, and less of a threat to defenders.

Therefore, staff encouraged Bowen to take more shots with his right foot, something that is now paying dividends.

Bowen already has a stunning eight goals in 12 league games for West Ham this season, and it’s certainly not a surprise that his England prospects are improving as a result.

Perhaps with England now qualified, the winger will be hoping for another start for Gareth Southgate’s side over the break.

Bowen is of course West Ham’s only representative in the squad, with James Ward-Prowse continuing to be a high-profile absentee.

Alan Shearer has recently stated his opinion that Ward-Prowse is ‘world class’ in his own right, referring to his set pieces.

However, Ward-Prowse will now want his overall game to be recognised as good enough for his country too.

The move to West Ham has undoubtedly been a good for the midfielder, but he may even become slightly frustrated that his game is often defined to set-pieces.

Perhaps along with Bowen, West Ham will be also giving Ward-Prowse subtle bits of advice to improve his game.

Either way, it’s clear that this West Ham squad is one brimming with talent.

And although Bowen is leading the line admirably on occasion, it seems as if recruiting a consistent striker is the next step in the club’s trajectory.
