Manchester City keeping tabs on Chelsea’s ‘hugely talented’ player

Manchester City have eyes on a couple of Chelsea players it seems and are keeping tabs on left-back, Ian Maatsen.

Maatsen has struggled to get much game-time this season despite staying in the summer, even though the Blues had agreed a deal to sell him to Burnley. At the time, Maatsen himself rejected the deal to move to Turf Moor permanently.

However, he has struggled to command a regular spot in the XI at Stamford Bridge this season and according to 90Min, his situation is being monitored by Manchester City.

Of course, we know already that City are among the teams also keeping an eye on Reece James.

Quite whether Chelsea would consider letting any of their young full-backs go to City, let alone both, is a completely different question.

Described in The Athletic as a ‘hugely talented’ player, Maatsen would have hoped to have had more of an impact this season under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, he is down the pecking order a tad and 90Min runs quotes today from Maatsen where he admits he might have to look elsewhere.

“I still think it’s possible to play more at Chelsea. Accepting [you won’t play] is difficult, as a young boy you always want more. I get confidence from the manager’s words and am ready when the opportunity comes. Meanwhile, I have to keep all options open. Maybe I’ll have to make a difficult decision later on, but then Chelsea will also let me know,” Maatsen said.

Quite whether City will end up making a move for Maatsen remains to be seen. At the moment, he is under the control of Chelsea, who triggered an extension to his contract to protect themselves.
