‘Tough kid’: Gabriel Magalhaes was so impressed with 20-year-old Arsenal man on international duty yesterday

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has now been congratulating his compatriot Marquinhos for his latest achievement with Brazil.

Marquinhos, who is on loan at FC Nantes this season, won the Pan American Games with Brazil’s under-23 side yesterday.

The Arsenal winger has been away at the tournament in recent weeks and started as Brazil beat Chile in the final.

And after such an achievement, the 20-year-old took to Instagram to share a photo in celebration.

Marquinhos uploaded a post with the caption: ‘Champion’, and Gabriel was quick to celebrate his Arsenal teammate.

Gabriel left a comment translating to English as: “You’re a tough kid.”

And it must have been nice for the centre-back to have a positive distraction in the wake of the Newcastle United defeat.

Gabriel played 90 minutes as Mikel Arteta’s team fell to a controversial winner in the second half.

And although Arteta was incensed by the officiating, Alan Shearer thought he was barking up the wrong tree.

Of course Arsenal themselves have now released a statement supporting the words of their manager in the aftermath.

Although Arsenal have endured a difficult run of form, Marquinhos does have his focus elsewhere this season.

His season-long loan hasn’t started too productively in France as of yet, given he’s mainly been restricted to a substitute role.

But with the number 10 shirt on his back, and a medal with Brazil in hand, Marquinhos will surely now hope for a bigger role.

It will be an incredibly tough task for Marquinhos to make an impression on the Arsenal first team alongside Gabriel when he returns.

But both Edu Gaspar and Arteta clearly saw something they liked in the youngster.

And given Arsenal do still look short of quality in attacking areas right now, Marquinhos may hope he can eventually make a difference.

Nonetheless, after a mixed year at Norwich City, the 20-year-old will just need to focus on making steady progress this season.

And much like Charlie Patino, his future can be assessed when he returns.
