‘I’d love to be there’… Neil Lennon makes a massive European prediction for Celtic

Celtic’s European record in the past ten years has been less than impressive.

Particularly in the Champions League, the Bhoys have failed to record a win in the competition for as long as I care to remember. This season, Brendan Rodgers finds himself bottom of Group E.

However, wins against Lazio and Feyenoord could turn that around and Celtic can still qualify for the Europa League. It can happen, but it looks unlikely.

But that hasn’t stopped Neil Lennon from looking to the future and admitting that he believes his old club could be successful on the continent once more.

Lennon said [The Offical Celtic FC podcast], “I do think that the glass ceiling will be broken one day. I do think we’ll get through to the last 16 again and hopefully, somebody will take them on beyond the last 16.

“I do think there’s another European trophy in us. Whenever that’ll be who knows but I’d love to be there to see it.”

It’s difficult to see where that European trophy will come from because Celtic will, more often than not, be competing in the Champions League.

With the rules changing from next season, third place in the group stages no longer means that teams will drop into the Europa League. The same rule also applies to those in UEFA’s second-tier competition next season.

There is no safety net to drop from the Europa League into the Europa Conference League. Once you are eliminated from any group stage in any competition, you’re out.

So unless Celtic lose their grip on the Scottish Premiership title, it’s going to be a long time until they get the opportunity to compete for a European trophy as, I think we can all agree, Celtic will never win the Champions League again.
