BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is “as good a passer as anyone on the planet right now”.

Ibrahima Konate netted his first goal for Liverpool, opening the scoring in the 17th minute from Andrew Robertson’s corner kick.

Sadio Mane then doubled the Reds’ lead in the 34th minute, applying the finishing touch to a superb counter-attack.

Alexander-Arnold supplied a pinpoint pass to Luis Diaz from the right flank.

The January signing then headed the ball across the goal for Mane to tap in from close range.

“Trent is as good a passer as anyone on the planet right now, I don’t care,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport, via the Liverpool Echo.

“When I saw one of his passes yesterday, I was screaming. And it’s not usually passes that do that to me.

“It’s out of order the way he passes the ball. It’s not only the execution, it’s the vision.”

Liverpool struggled early in the second half as Benfica halved the deficit.

Konate failed to clear a low ball into the box and Darwin Nunez was on hand to slam home a great poacher’s finish.

Liverpool eventually regained a foothold in the match and restored their two-goal advantage three minutes from time.

Diaz strode confidently past Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos before slotting into the far corner of the net.

Liverpool are next in action on Sunday when they head to Manchester City for a crunch Premier League clash.
