‘Jury is well and truly still out’: BBC pundit slates Celtic 26-year-old’s display

Celtic defender Carl Starfelt has been criticised by BBC Sport pundit Rory Loy for his error on Boxing Day.

The 26-year-old Hoops man was overall quite decent in Sunday’s trip to St Johnstone.

However, Starfelt made a mistake which led to the hosts halving the deficit in the second half.

Liel Abada opened the scoring for the Bhoys after just nine minutes.

The 20-year-old bundled home at the second attempt after Josip Juranovic squared the ball to him.

Abada then doubled Celtic’s advantage on 22 minutes, slotting in at the far post from Tom Rogic’s through-ball.

Starfelt crucially intercepted a Saints attack on 39 minutes when the hosts could have been in on goal.

However, the Saints struck back on 69 minutes through Chris Kane.

Viv Solomon-Otabor latched onto Starfelt’s slack pass and crossed for Kane to head home.

The £4.5million man’s error didn’t matter much in the end as Celtic got a third and saw the game out.

Rogic set up Nir Bitton to rifle home an emphatic finish.

Nonetheless, Loy wasn’t impressed with Starfelt’s error, suggesting he

“The jury is well and truly still out on Carl Starfelt,” he said (26/12, 14:07).

“He has a few good games and then he’s capable of moments of madness.

“The second and third mistakes always come so quickly after the first.”
