‘Outstanding’: Gary Neville admits he’s completely changed his mind about £17m Tottenham player yesterday

On a night of chaos in North London, Gary Neville thought Guglielmo Vicario still stood tall for Tottenham Hotspur against Chelsea.

Neville was speaking during Sky Sports’ live coverage of the game and mentioned that he had previously had his doubts about the Spurs keeper.

However, after an excellent early stop against Nicolas Jackson, Neville was confident that Tottenham had a gem in Vicario.

The pundit continued to praise the Italian throughout the game but admitted his change in opinion early on.

Neville said: “First time I watched him live, Vicario, I was thinking I need to watch him again.

“The times I’ve watched him since he’s been absolutely outstanding.

“He does really well [Nicolas] Jackson, puts a couple of Spurs defenders on their backsides.

“But the anticipation of Vicario, because he has to go early, he’s there, that’s a brilliant, brilliant save.”

And despite conceding four goals on a crazy night, Vicario can be very proud of his performance.

Tottenham defended their goal admirably with nine men, but eventually couldn’t sustain their energy levels.

Neville is no long unsure about Vicario at Tottenham

Of course, Tottenham will now have a much changed back line for their coming games after the players they lost tonight.

Cristian Romero will now face a ban along with Destiny Udogie.

And Micky van de Ven looked in a lot of pain when he left the field.

There’s obviously a lot of ramifications to stomach for Ange Postecoglou and his side, but they can also take positives.

Spurs came out of the game with a ton of credit, and they really did display the character of their team this season in their reaction.

Udogie and Romero will be disappointed with their lapse of judgement, but others reacted well.

And Neville was right to praise the brilliant work of Vicario for Tottenham, a player who has had his doubts.

Mark Schwarzer was another pundit admitting that he wasn’t quite sure of Vicario not so long ago.

But those opinions on the £17m goalkeeper will be swiftly changing.
