BBC pundit says 26-year-old Arsenal player is often criticised, but was so impressive vs Lens

Chris Sutton lauded Gabriel Jesus during the first-half as Arsenal blew Lens away on Wednesday, noting that the striker is often criticised for his finishing ability.

Sutton was speaking on BBC Radio Five Live after the Brazilian put the Gunners 2-0 up at the Emirates on a night where Mikel Arteta’s side’s ticket to the knockout stages was secured.

Gabriel Jesus has had an interesting start to the campaign. The 26-year-old has unquestionably been a game-changing signing for the Gunners. However, he has still faced criticism.

Chris Sutton lauds Gabriel Jesus after goal

Some are yet to be convinced that he is the striker to fire Arsenal to the Premier League title. Jesus has been criticised for not being ruthless enough in front of goal.

But he did superbly on Wednesday, doubling Arsenal’s lead with a smart finish after doing brilliantly to create a yard of space inside the penalty area.

Certainly, Chris Sutton was really impressed by Jesus’ work and finish.

“It’s a brilliant finish from Jesus, it really is. He’s often criticised for his finishing,” he told BBC Radio Five Live.

Arsenal need Brazilian to step up in the Premier League

Jesus’ next task has to be to take this form into the Premier League. He has now scored four goals in four Champions League games. It is a remarkable run.

However, he has just one in eight in the top-flight. And that simply is not good enough, particularly when he shows just how much quality he truly possesses in Europe.

He does so much to the team that it is difficult to be too critical. However, Arsenal’s forward line has not been as prolific this season – which seems a silly thing to say after they tore Lens apart in the first-half.

So it is imperative that Jesus chips in with more goals now. They have another amazing opportunity this season.

And Jesus has proved in the past that he has the quality to lead the line for a title-winner.
