‘Best midfielder in Scotland’… Peter Martin says Celtic have a player who’s better than Matt O’Riley

The great thing about Celtic is that they have many, many talented players at the club who are all starting to shine this season.

The most obvious one is Matt O’Riley. The 23-year-old midfielder was himself labelled the best player in the country after his performance against Atletico Madrid in the 2-2 draw at Celtic Park.

Luis Palma has also been receiving plenty of plaudits as the Honduran tears up the Scottish Premiership and the Champions League.

But it was neither of those three that has caught the eye of pundit, Peter Martin. After watching Scotland qualify for Euro 2024, Martin was over the moon with Celtic captain, Callum McGregor’s performances for his country.

Martin said [PLZ Soccer], “I look at our midfield three and the way they play and you think to yourself, McGinn strong as an ox runs himself in the ground.

“For me the best midfielder in Scotland, Callum McGregor. He is like a well-oiled machine he just keeps the whole thing going and then you’ve got Scott McTominay.”

Callum McGregor is a Celtic legend. He will be for Scotland soon

There is no doubt that McGregor is a legend at Celtic. His trophy haul of eight league titles, five Scottish Cups and seven League Cups speak for itself.

Despite that, amazingly he has only won Player of the Year once and that was in season 2020/21. McGregor has made the SPFL Team of the Year on three separate occasions.

However, with Scotland, he will now be representing his country at a second major tournament. And with the squad that Steve Clarke has assembled, it would be hard to bet against them making it out of the group stages.

This Scotland side fears no one. They have proven that with impressive wins against Spain and Norway. And McGregor’s performances have been at the heart of those results.

If Scotland can make it out of the group stages for the first time in their history, McGregor can add that accolade to his 53 caps and go down as a legend at both Celtic and Scotland.
