‘Celtic would sell’… Andy Walker believes 25-year-old player would be allowed to leave for a ‘big offer’

Everybody knows that Celtic are a selling club. Gone are the days when they kept their best players at the club for any length of time.

Only Callum McGregor and James Forrest are the exceptions as both look set to end their careers at Celtic.

And despite Celtic clearly needing to add players of quality to compete in Europe, that hasn’t stopped Andy Walker from claiming that the club would sell one of their better players if they received a big offer for him soon.

Liam Scales could be sold by Celtic for a ‘big offer’

The former Celtic striker believes that Liam Scales’ performances in Europe mean that if they got a big offer then they would not hesitate to let him go.

Walker said [The Go Radio Football Show], “The squad’s too thin for Champions League level. I think that has been proven over the five games that Celtic have played.

“I think they have competed, but not for 90 minutes. And just in general you look at the model of the club.

“Look at Liam Scales, there’s someone who I think has excelled this season and we are not even halfway through the season.

“But if someone was to come in with a big offer, Celtic would sell. That is what they have been doing through the years and that is what has made them successful in Scotland.”

Celtic must offer Liam Scales a new contract

The Irish defender has been a revelation over the past few months. Almost certainly leaving the club in the summer, Scales remained at Celtic due to an incredible injury crisis that engulfed the Hoops defence.

But Scales came into a makeshift partnership with Gustaf Lagerbielke and has performed brilliantly all season.

So impressive has Scales been for Celtic, he is now a fully-fledged Republic of Ireland international and a bonafide Champions League defender.

Entering into the last 18 months of his contract, the 25-year-old has expressed his desire to stay at Celtic and, hopefully, the club are looking into that now.

Brendan Rodgers’ verdict on Celtic’s Liam Scales

The Celtic manager has been hugely impressed with Scales. Labelled as one of the ‘biggest surprises‘ of Rodgers’ management career, the Celtic manager couldn’t speak highly enough of him.

After winning his first cap for Ireland, Rodgers said, “In a matter of weeks, Liam has gone from a player playing and thinking he’s leaving Celtic, to playing regularly in the team, to playing in the Champions League and making his international debut.

“That’s how football can work for you if you stay focused and concentrated, and I’m absolutely delighted for him, but now consistency is the name of the game.”

And consistent he has been. Celtic need to make moves to tie him down soon because if they don’t, then the offer that Walker believes Celtic will get will not be as big as the board think.
