‘He’s played really well’… Celtic now urged to offer 25-year-old a new contract after Lazio game last night

If there was any good news to come out of the Lazio result last night it probably would be Celtic extending the contract of defender, Liam Scales.

The Republic of Ireland international, and the whole team to be fair, didn’t have the best of times against the Italians but what cannot be denied is that he has been one of Celtic’s most consistent players under Brendan Rodgers this season.

And former Celtic hero, Peter Grant, wants to see his old club deal him in after watching him in the Champions League.

Grant said [The Go Radio Football Show], “I thought he’s done exceptionally well in the big European games I thought he’s played really, really well against top-quality opposition.

“Listen, his performances deserve a new contract. The circumstances now might be slightly different because he’s a starter and gets more cash and other clubs are interested.

“Because let’s be honest, left-sided central defenders are not easy to get. And a lot of people like that balance because of the way they play.

“And to be fair, I thought he has defended really well. He’s done really well against top-quality players. And I think that’s always the makings of a good player.”

Liam Scales wants to stay at Celtic

The Irishman has been vocal in his intentions of wanting to stay at Celtic this week. Asked whether or not he would like to sign a new deal, Scales said, “Yeah definitely. I’m loving it here at the moment. As a kid from Ireland brought up this is where I’d want to be and playing regularly. I’m happy here and I definitely wouldn’t want to rush away from it.”

With rumours that Anderlecht are looking to sign Scales, the need to tie him down is even more apparent now that he is entering the last 18 months of his contract.

Now I’m not suggesting for a second that Scales is the answer to Celtic’s Champions League conundrum. We all know what the issues are surrounding that.

However, he has been one of Rodgers’ better defenders and as Grant stipulates, he deserves to be dealt in. Especially after he delivered when Celtic needed him most.
