Brendan Rodgers makes transfer pledge after Celtic’s early Champions League exit

The Champions League once used to be a source of joy for the Celtic fans. They held no fear in the past whenever they were drawn against the likes of Manchester United or Manchester City.

The Hoops once had Parkhead as a fortress of fear for visiting European teams but now it seems like it’s a happy hunting ground not only for Europe’s top teams but for the middle of the road sides as well.

A 15 game winless streak in the Champions League is a tough statistic to look at and the Celtic fans are clear that the club’s recruitment is what is to blame.

Well, after last night’s 2-0 defeat to Lazio, Brendan Rodgers has made a transfer pledge as he looks to turn around Celtic’s poor European record.

Rodgers said [BBC], “It’s the overall quality. We need to have our very best players available.

“What makes the difference is that bit of experience and genuine quality. That’s something we can hopefully resolve over the next couple of windows.

“This group has gained more experience and shown they can compete in some games – but we need to add quality. That’s the glaring thing that stands out.”

With TBR Celtic telling this morning how Kieran Tierney would be open to a return to the club, that’s the kind of player that would appease the fans as they continue to be Europe’s whipping boys.

Watching Celtic limp meekly out of Europe once more, it’s been five years since the supporters watched Celtic perform on the continent when they saw Neil Lennon take his side to the last 32 of the Europa League with two games to spare in 2018.

All eyes will be on the Celtic board this January as the fans will be expecting the club to spend some of that vast £70m they have swirling in their bank account. They had better not let them down.
