‘He’s got ability’… John Hartson says Celtic’s £2m summer signing must do more after watching him vs Lazio

There are many players that let down Celtic tonight after another frustrating Champions League fixture.

The 2-0 loss to Lazio means that with one game left to go, Celtic are completely out of Europe before Christmas for the second season in a row.

And as per usual after a disappointing European result, the focus shifts towards Celtic’s recruitment and how it should be better going into Europe’s top competition.

And whilst John Hartson wasn’t totally critical of Hyunjun Yang, the former Celtic hero says the Hoops winger must do more after watching the £2m summer signing’s performance against Lazio tonight.

Hartson said [TNT Sports], “I think there’s more to come from [Hyunjun] Yang. Again, [Luis] Palma was similar when he first came in and he started to put in some good performances and he stayed in the team.

“With Palma being out it’s a good opportunity for these players to come in and make an impact to give Brendan Rodgers something to think about when he’s picking his team.

We know he’s got ability. He’s certainly shown that already in his early Celtic career.”

He’s not the only one who needs to contribute more in a Celtic jersey in Europe. There were a number of players who were poor tonight but the last thing Celtic needs is a witchhunt.

Celtic need to invest properly for the Champions League

What Celtic really need is proper investment into the first team and hold off from purchasing any more project players.

Goodness knows there is certainly enough of them at the club. Look, the difference to Lazio’s bench compared to Celtic’s was stark.

Where Celtic bring on the likes of Hyeongyu Oh and Mikey Johnston to change the game, Lazio have Ciro Immobile and Pedro in reserve.

I’m not saying Celtic needs to spend silly money to get players of that calibre because that’s just not going to happen.

But pushing the boat out for that extra bit of quality will help and they must do it. Because if they don’t next season could be just as bad as the last two in the Champions League.
