‘Immense’ 25-year-old player admits he was close to leaving Celtic this summer

Liam Scales’ meteoric rise at Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and the Champions League is something that has caught the supporters off guard.

As for Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers, the Hoops gaffer freely admits that Scales’ development at the club is one of the biggest surprises of his career so far but he also shared how thought the 25-year-old was set to leave Celtic this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international’s form for Celtic has been ‘immense‘ this season but it could have all been so different as Scales reveals he was in talks with Aberdeen about a permanent move.

Scales said [Football Scotland], “I suppose at the start of the year I think I came back into pre-season with Celtic and most people thought I was going to go back to Aberdeen.

“It was sort of in the pipeline, there was talk of it happening. Then obviously a few injuries happened.
“I think I’ve surprised in the sense that maybe I wasn’t fully in the picture, then a few injuries happened and I was thrown straight in and did well, and I’ve held my place now.

“I spoke to them at the end of my loan and they were keen to have me back for a year or 18 months and move me on, and I loved Aberdeen, Aberdeen is a brilliant football club.

“I was really looking forward to trying to get back there and do that, but it has worked out better for me now and I’m happy that it has.”

So are the Celtic fans, Liam. Celtic have had an issue with trying to recruit a left-sided defender for years and who would have thought the answer to that problem was under their noses all this time?

Scales is once again on international duty this week and the Celtic fans will be delighted that his form for the club is being recognised by his country once more.

TBR Celtic shared how Celtic are set to offer Scales a new deal in the coming weeks and I have to say, it is thoroughly deserved.
