Caoimhin Kelleher is set for a run of games for Liverpool in the coming weeks.
Alisson Becker has gone down with a hamstring injury, and the Irishman is set to get a few chances in the side.
However, as sad as it is to say, we all know that Kelleher’s time in the Liverpool team will be limited.
Indeed, the 25-year-old isn’t the Reds’ number one, and he likely never will be, and speaking on Off The Ball, Keith Treacy has claimed that it’s quite depressing that a player of such talent is stuck in a situation where he knows he’s never likely to get a proper run as number one.
Kelleher’s situation is quite sad.
Treacy shared his verdict on the goalkeeper.
“I wasn’t sure when Alisson went down with his hamstring, I thought he was just killing the game against City, but it is a proper hamstring injury. It looks like Caoimhin is going to get some gametime. It’s quite depressing because I’d love to sit here and say if he plays well he’ll stay in there, but we can all assume that when Alisson is fit he’s going to come back in no matter what Caiomhin does,” Treacy said.
It’s a shame for Kelleher
It’s a real shame that Kelleher is in this situation.
He’s a talented goalkeeper who would probably start for most teams in the Premier League, but he’s having to play second-fiddle behind a man who is arguably the greatest goalkeeper the Premier League has ever seen.
We really can’t blame Jurgen Klopp for not using Kelleher that much. After all, Alisson has made himself undroppable, but, at the same time, it must be frustrating for Kelleher to be a perennial backup knowing that his role will never change for as long as Alisson is at Anfield.
