Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both agree one Liverpool player has improved loads recently

Gary Lineker has said that Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk is getting better and is improving.

Alan Shearer has also made a similar observation about the £220,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender, and has named another Liverpool player who has been superb this season.

So, what have Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer said about Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk? Let’s take a look.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, Liverpool and Netherlands international central defender Virgil van Dijk has improved a lot in recent weeks.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Lineker has said that Van Dijk’s improvement in form is good for Liverpool.

Ex-Newcastle United striker Shearer has also made a similar observation about the 32-year-old.

The Match of the Day pundit has added that Dominik Szoboszlai has been a great signing for Liverpool.

Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window and has been one of the signings of the season.

Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast: “I think Liverpool are where I thought they would be. They are always going to score goals with the forwards that they have.

“Szoboszlai has been a great signing, I think, for them. It is exactly what they needed and how they needed to strengthen.

“I just still think they might come a bit short defensively to try and win the title.”

Lineker responded: “Van Dijk has looked better though, hasn’t he? Which is good for them.”

Shearer said: “He has in the last three or four weeks, yeah.”

Virgil van Dijk a key player for Liverpool

I personally do not think that Virgil van Dijk will get back to the level he was at before his injury, but he is still a very good and important player for Liverpool.

In my opinion, if Liverpool are to win the Premier League title this season, then Van Dijk will have to be on top of his game throughout.

City are a mean defensive machine, and in William Saliba and Gabriel, Arsenal also have two brilliant centre-backs.

There is speculation that Liverpool are looking to sign a centre-back to partner Van Dijk.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool splash the cash and bring in someone like Goncalo Inacio in the middle of the season.

Van Dijk has made 238 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. The Dutchman has scored 20 goals, give seven assists, and kept 96 clean sheets in those games.
