Mikel Arteta could start ‘tremendous’ 23-year-old for Arsenal against Sevilla

Arsenal will hope to get back to winning ways as they welcome Champions League opponents Sevilla to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

A win for the Gunners could ensure their progression to the knockout stages of the competition, if other results go their way.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta currently has a number of selection problems ahead of the match, with Martin Odegaard a doubt for the game.

In addition, fellow Gunners midfielder Thomas Partey remains on the sidelines with a hip issue.

This means Arteta seems likely to name Fabio Vieira in the Arsenal starting XI, potentially alongside Declan Rice and Jorginho.

Vieira will want to prove himself after struggling in recent weeks. The 23-year-old didn’t do great in his last start, the Carabao Cup loss to West Ham.

Admittedly, he did set up Odegaard’s late goal, but he was largely anonymous for most of the game, rarely troubling the Hammers.

Vieira did come off the bench against Newcastle but, while he was busy in his cameo, he lacked cutting edge.

Vieira showing glimpses of quality for Arsenal

The Arsenal talent started the season well but his form has dipped, so he’ll be eager to bounce back with a strong display against Sevilla.

Earlier this year, Arteta branded Vieira a “tremendous” player, and he certainly has the potential to do well, having shown glimpses of his quality.

He said in February, as relayed on HaytersTV: “Very close (to fully adapting).

“He is starting to give me big headaches because I see every single day what he is capable of doing. A tremendous player!”

Now, let’s see if Vieira can return to form and, crucially, maintain consistency for an Arsenal side hoping to win silverware this term.

He’s got something to prove, so Sevilla beware.
