‘I am sure’… Callum McGregor makes Celtic board claim after Champions League exit

The dust will never really settle on Celtic’s exit from the Champions League. Not this week anyway.

As sites like TBR Celtic, pundits and former players all analyse and give their opinions on why Celtic find themselves without European football after Christmas yet again, Callum McGregor was asked if he thought the Celtic board would back their manager in January.

Brendan Rodgers once again bemoaned the lack of quality in his squad to compete in the Champions League but to do that, takes money.

Celtic have plenty of it and McGregor has backed the board to deliver for the Celtic manager when the window opens in just over four weeks time.

McGregor said [Daily Record], “Yeah, I think they will. January is notorious for being the one where they can see how the first half of the season plays out.

“And whatever we need, they have a good track record of doing that, in terms of backing the team and backing the manager. I am sure that’ll happen in January.”

Celtic’s key positions to strengthen in the transfer window

There are various opinions out there regarding what is the priority positions for Rodgers in the January window.

Whilst some think the striking department is important due to the upcoming Asian Cup, others might look at the defence after Celtic conceded two late quickfire goals against Lazio.

For me, I think there is a lot more work needing done. The defence and the strikers are undoubtedly positions that need quality added. Especially down the lefthand side.

But what has also been glaring is the lack of creativity that has been shown by Celtic when trying to carve out chances.

The backup wingers are simply not good enough yet. For all his endeavours, Hyunjun Yang is not ready for the Celtic first team yet.

James Forrest has lost that edge that made him such a dangerous player for Celtic and Mikey Johnston, who has been at Celtic for eight seasons now, is only playing due to the injuries to Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda.

In my opinion, Celtic needs to add at least five first-team-ready players and those positions would be left-back, goalkeeper, striker, defensive midfielder and winger.

Anything less than that and the fans can look forward to another season of Champions League mediocrity next season assuming, that is, Celtic win the league.
