‘You can see’… Michael Stewart delivers Celtic squad verdict after draw with Motherwell

Whenever Celtic loses or drops points, the pundits and the fans look at the squad and lament the fact that Brendan Rodgers never strengthened key areas of the team in the summer.

It is well known that Celtic had two areas of the team that they wanted to add quality to in the summer but after yesterday’s draw with Motherwell, it seems that there may be more than just two additions required.

Earlier today, TBR Celtic told how BBC pundit, Michael Stewart, said Celtic should be looking at signing Lawrence Shankland to solve their striker problem in January.

Well, this time, he has gone one step further with his blunt assessment of Brendan Rodgers‘ side.

Stewart said [BBC Sportsound], “So far, they do look a little bit more vulnerable, but when you look at the team itself, they’re missing a lot of big players and they need to recruit.

“Obviously a lot has been made at the AGM about Brendan Rodgers and he’ll have the final say [on signings] and a lot was made in the summer about the projects that were signed. And you can see that.

“The team without the likes of Jota and obviously he’s left but like in the team [Alistair] Johnson not playing there today.

“You take those guys out of the team, Maeda is not there. The team’s not as strong and they’ve not got that same strength and depth that perhaps they have had previously.”

Positions Celtic must strengthen in the January transfer window

A lot of talk has been made of Joe Hart and how he was at fault for Motherwell’s equaliser yesterday afternoon.

There is also a niggling annoyance with the Celtic fans that a left-back wasn’t signed by Rodgers to provide competition for Greg Taylor as well.

With Alexandro Bernabei clearly not rated by the Celtic manager, Taylor needs someone to push him so that he doesn’t become complacent.

A striker is an obvious signing that needs to be made and there is an argument that with Reo Hatate missing, Celtic don’t have that quality on the bench to step in for the Japanese midfielder.

Clearly, there is a lot of work still needs to be done by Rodgers to get the squad to where he wants it to be. Let’s hope the Celtic board release those millions they have in the bank and allow the gaffer to bring that necessary quality in.
