‘Doesn’t quite understand’… Callum Davidson says £2m summer signing is still struggling with Celtic’s system

Celtic’s disappointing draw with Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership yesterday will have left the fans feeling frustrated and angry.

Frustrated that they couldn’t rekindle the same kind of performance that saw Aberdeen off just prior to the international break and angry that they have allowed Rangers yet another opportunity to close the gap at the top of the league.

And whilst the team has started to look like they are gelling well, Callum Davidson has said that one Celtic player looks like he is still struggling to get to grips with Brendan Rodgers‘ style of play.

On punditry duties for the BBC, Davidson said [BBC Sportscene], “He [Matt O’Riley] wants that ball in behind. That’s what he’s been working on. That’s how they get their chances.

“Again, [Hyunjun] Yang‘s quite new to the system. He doesn’t quite understand what he wants.

“You know when you play against Celtic, that’s where they’re going to get their crosses from.

“Today, they were a wee bit laboured, a wee bit slow.”

Hyunjun Yang blows hot and cold for Celtic

The South Korean had been enjoying a rich vein of form recently for Celtic. Since his £2m summer move, Yang struggled to make his mark in the side at the beginning of the season.

But recently, Yang had been showing signs of a player that looked worth the couple of million Celtic had invested in him.

Yet in yesterday’s draw with Motherwell, he seemed to be back the guy that the Celtic fans saw struggle against, rather ironically, at Fir Park back in the 2-1 win in September.

With Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda returning from injury soon, Yang will need to find more consistency if he has any intention of keeping his place in this Celtic side.

The former K League Young Player of the Year was brought to the club for exactly these kinds of games and if he can’t produce against teams who are struggling and stuffy, he may well find himself watching on from the Celtic dugout before too long.
